Scotland Food & Drink (SF&D) were delighted to work with North Ayrshire Council on a series of producer tastings, showcasing the best of Scotland’s larder on the #madeinayrshire marquee at The Scottish Open.
Working with the council and the producers, SF&D’s Fiona Richmond attended the four-day event, chatting with the spectators about North Ayrshire’s food and drink and inspiring the public to try the local produce on offer. These are the producers who took part, read on to find out more about them:
All That’s Delicious
All That’s Delicious is an award-winning artisan producer of Delicious Handmade Tablet and a Fabulous range of Baking Mixes based in North Ayrshire. The award-winning Tablet was chosen to be gifted in the hamper of all the players for the Ryder Cup at The Gleneagles Hotel. Prior to setting up the business Sharron worked with Britain’s well-known celebrity chefs Gary Rhodes and Marco Pierre White setting up their first restaurants on board cruise ships where she worked. The Handmade Traditional Tablet has been awarded a Great Taste Award by the Guild of Fine Food.
Aye Local Real Food
The family business started in 2014 with one aim, to make food that made both them and customers happy. They use well sourced ingredients from local producers who are as passionate about quality and provenance as we are to make food of the highest quality. All of the free-range pork is supplied by rare breed farm Nethergate Larder in Dunlop and the eggs are from the award winning farm Corrie Mains near Mauchline. Both of these suppliers are within 30 minutes of the kitchen.
Ayr Brewing Co
Ayr Brewing Company produces hand crafted, high quality ales, brewed in the heart of Burns Country. The Ayr Brewing Company brewed its first ales in October 2009, and in that short space of time have gained numerous awards at both local and national level.
Barwheys is a traditionally-made award winning hard Ayrshire cheese. Barwheys is made exclusively from the unpasteurised milk of their special herd of pedigree Ayrshire cattle that graze on the green pastures that surround the dairy. The cheese is made by hand, bandaged in traditional cotton cheesecloth and carefully aged on wooden shelves for between twelve and fourteen months.
With the ‘from estate to plate’ concept they source a wide variety of game from Scotland, processed in the modern factory, and delivered to chefs across the UK, as well as exporting to Europe. Their Mission Statement defines the type of company they are and the people that work within it: “We, Braehead Foods are committed to the highest level of Service (that you can rely on), Quality (that is guaranteed), and Assurance (through Accreditations) giving you ‘peace of mind’.”
Dunlop Dairy is a Traditional Ayrshire Dunlop cheesemaker based near Stewarton Ayrshire, with a range of farmhouse Scottish cheeses you can taste and buy in our Cheese Shop and Tearoom. In 1989, they began making cheese. In the early days sheep and goats’ cheeses were very specialised and the farm found a demand for cows’ milk cheese. Being near Dunlop, the obvious cheese to make was the famous Dunlop.
Fencebay Fisheries sells specially selected, hand farmed produce from the Ayrshire coast. A visit to Fencebay Smokehouse & Farm Shop in Fairlie is an insight into all that is fresh from the land and Ayrshire coast. From the islands and lush mainland, they have brought together fish, shellfish, dairy food, meats, chutneys and baking proudly produced by local Ayshire farmers, fisherman and country folk.
Kirkton Liqueurs are produced in the West Coast of Scotland from local ingredients. Traditional flavours are infused in single malt Scottish vodka produced at Strathleven Distillery.
Lime Tree Larder
A family run business, Lime Tree Larder specialises in award winning artisan ice cream and handmade chocolates. In addition, they run chocolate workshops and parties and love having groups and school visits to learn about the origin of chocolate. They are based just 20 minutes from Glasgow, on the road to Largs, in an idyllic rural setting beside an avenue of lime trees on the working farm.
J Pieroni & Sons is a family run business, third generation in fact and operates from a fish processing unit on Peebles St in Ayr. The company has over 72 years’ experience in the trade and has earned an enviable reputation as a leading wholesale supplier of top grade fresh fish and shellfish, providing great value for money and top quality service.
Taste of Arran
